Italy Good Friday, Easter.

I spent good friday working in Palermo, sourcing italian properties in sicily. I was amazed to see so many local italians at work. The town centre was full of tourists as the good friday procession brought the traffic to a grinding halt. Driving in Palermo down town is to say the least entertaining and dangerous. I viewed a beautiful classic 400 square metre appartment right on Piazza Marina Palermo. If anyone wants further details please contact MIPC directly.

Salemi Sicily Sicilia 1 euro house Italy

Today sunday 3/22/09 the second series of the documentary about Salemi Sicily Italy was transmitted on CBS Sunday Morning.

To acquire one of the properties you must first register your interest by completing an online form at Salemi . Then MIPC will register you interest with the Salemi council. This is non binding and simply puts you on the Salemi councils mailing list for future correspondence when the final details of the full application procedures will be issued by the Salemi counil towards the end of April 2009.

The second step is, once registered, is to submit a letter of introduction explaining a little about yourself and why you wish to acquire a sicilian property in Salemi. MIPC will forward you details about the content of this letter of introduction once you have completed step 1.

The Italian government on Friday 6/2/09 made a major intervention into the Italian Economy. Italy as everywhere else is struggling through the global crisis and finally Berlusconi’s government have made positive moves forward to assist the economy in Italy.  17.8 billion euros allocated  to funding for a major public works program.

The package was approved by the cabinet after it received a go-ahead from the interministerial economic committee Cipe earlier in the day.

Funding for the program is a mix of public and private resources, with infrastructure projects in southern Italy, including the Messina bridge linking Sicily to Reggio Calabria on the mainland, receiving some 49% of the public cash. A project that has been on the pipeline for years approved in 2003, cancelled by Prodi in 2006 and now lets hope will go ahead. Salemi Film – Salemi Music – Salemi Arts festival Sicily

Salemi Sicily continues to attract global attention in the film music and arts world. Following the recent announcement that Kims video from new york will relocate to Salemi, there has been much interest in the cultural agenda here in Salemi.

The Salemi council is looking for participants for a series of cultural events, including the Salemi film festival, Salemi music festival and the Salemi arts festival.

Salemi Kims video is been discussed not only in Salemi Sicily Italy but also in the states.

After todays article in the corriere della sera about Kim’s video in Salemi sicily it  has also been discussed live on the radio in the states. If you missed the interview goto Salemi PRI radio stroll to the bottom and click the audio link. Interesting listening.

Salemi in Sicily has recently been documented on TV in the states. I have been told that it was on PRI program, the world and ona channel called NPR.

On average, how large are these homes – how many square metres each?

They are currently ruins and need completly rebuilding, average size will be from 70 -100sqm

Is it possible to choose property with the best view, easiest street access, least damage or other attributes?

Allocation details have not yet been released, there are rumours of auctions, preference to cultural/artistic applicants and people who will live here…the objective is to have a buzzing community not a ghost town.

Can the purchaser get a written guarantee of the “thousand euros per square metre” repair pricing?

Building contracts come with price guarantees. The final price is to be determined obviously.

What rules are in place to prevent price gouging from local builders?

The council may appoint large contractors on fixed prices.

What, if any, is the penalty for failure to complete restoration within the two-year limit?

This is more a commitment to complete rather than a deadline. The council don’t want people sitting on land and not completing the restoration.

Is it possible for me, a U.S. citizen, to fully own such a house?

Yes US citizens can fully owna house in Italy. No problem.

If so, how does ownership affect my visa and/or immigration status in Sicily?

Best to ask your consulate that 1.

Would I be able to live in my Salemi home for extended periods, or would I be subject to regular visitor status regardless of owning Sicilian property?

Yes the council want people to live here. Re visas ask consulate.
