Trapani (Birgi) Airport TPS Sicily

Trapani (Birgi) Airport TPS Sicily

Updated summer 2011.

Trapani airport (TPS) is fastly expanding and becoming the gateway to south west sicily, Trapani, Marsala, Salemi, Scopello, Segesta and the Egadi Islands. Historically a military airport. With Ryanair operating flights from here since last year, the airport has transformed from an outside hut into a discreet international airport. Don’t expect too much, you still have to walk to and from the plane across the landing strips, but its getting there.

Over the last 6 months the once old arrival lounge and delapidated departure lounge has now been transformed, there is even an escalator to go to the new 1st floor departure lounge. Don’t expect to see screens listing departure gate (as of 2011 they exist), as it is each gate is dedicated to a specific destination. That will make sense when you get through customs control. Currently gate 6 is exclusively for departures to London Luton for example.

Location: 20 minutes south of Trapani, between Trapani and Marsala. Motorway connection 5 minutes distance. I would strongly advise car hire for onward transport as the public services are scarce.

Trapani :

Enjoy the scenic arrival flying in over the Egadi Islands of Favignana, Levanzo, Marettimo and the hilltop town of Erice as you fly in to TPS. Trapani from the air looks a little rundown, with its 1970’s appartment blocks. Recently modernised for the America’s cup in 2005, (what was it like before?) Trapani offers an interesting seaside town, fishing and commercial port (yes international cruisers now dock here) with beautiful churches and amazingly a pretty modern wide range of shops. Great place to start a holiday round SW Sicily.

Trapani accomodation :

MIPC has some great local contacts with hotels, b&bs, seaside villas for rental and city centre furnished appartments to rent. Use the email MIPC tab at the top of this page to get more information or visit here Trapani rent

Car hire dropoff: Follow directions for Trapani Birgi airport. The very last sign is confusing as it states Florio military airport “Aeroporto Florio”…its the same airport..theres only one here. Drive towards main terminal and drop off on the left just before long term car park barriers all before terminal. No petrol station in airport. Nearest petrol station for top up difficult to find. Make sure you top up on motorway, or downtown Trapani, or Marsala.

Public Transport: (not frequent)

Maria, There are no direct routes to Erice from TPS, unless you have a car hire in Sicily.
Best route is TPS to Trapani downtown by bus. Then from bus station get a further bus trapani Erice.
You could also try a more scenic route by getting (once in trapani) the mountain lift which runs from Trapani town centre to Erice.
Will email you timetable and further details. MIPC

there are no such camper park, camper storage in sicily near Trapani. It is often a problem for visitors whom buy or hire a camper van and then wish to visit the sicilian islands and need camper storage. Though there are other options for camper parking inland near our MIPC sicily office base. Please specify if you are looking for covered/uncovered parking and whether you will need access to the camper in this 6 month period. We can offer secure camper parking in sicily.
