Last year 2008 Italy appeared to be surviving the global recession. Life continued as normal with only a few cut backs over xmas. No Italian banks have gone bankrupt, Italian mortgage interest rate was capped at 4% for variable interest rate Italian mortgages.
The air has changed since the start of 2009. The global automobile recession has now arrived in Italy. The industry contributes 11.5% to the Italian GDP 300,000 jobs are at risk.
Also in the italian building / construction industry 250,000 jobs are also at risk.
Italian jobs are been cut. Italian blue collar workers are been made redundant “cassa integrazione”. Italian shopfloor workers are been paid to stay at home, yes on a reduced salary.
Ironically Italian workers from IREM, been sent to England to work on the Lindsey refinery have triggered major strikes in the UK against foreign workers taking UK jobs. “British jobs for British workers”.
Other countries have already allocated funds to the automobile industry. France €7.8 Billion : Germany €1.5 Billion : Great Britain €2.5 Billion.
The Italian government’s minister of economic development Claudio Scajola, is not intervening as quickly as other countries, only by late next week will they decide the Italian government intervention into the motor industry. Meanwhile they are talking about
· 1500 euros for those who buy a new car and write off their existing one.
· Super road taxes on SUV’s upto 500 euros.

Here is a list of action proposed by Italian car manufacturers FIAT recently reported in The Repubblica Italian national press.
Town : Factory : Action
Torino : Iveco (now Powertrain) : Production stopped for 3 weeks for 1300 workers
Torino : Mirafiori : 5000 workers stop production for the 1st and last week of February and the first 2 weeks of March.
Chieti : Val di SAngro (Sevel) : 900 temporary staff already sent home. 6000 workers will stop production for 2 weeks in February and the 1st in March.
Campobasso : Termoli : 1000 of the 2700 staff will stop production or 1 week a month.
Potenza : Melfi : 2 weeks on 2 weeks off for 5100 staff
Cassine : Frosinone : 2 weeks on 2 weeks off for 3800 staff
Naples : Pomigliano : 5300 shopfloor workers various weeks production will be stopped.
Palermo : Terminal Imerese : 1470 workers production1 week a month

Our country was also hit hard by the Economic Recession. At least we are seeing some signs of economic recovery now. I hope that we could recover soon from this recession.

I think we are also seeing some signs of recovery from the Economic Recession. Of course, we have no idea of how long it will take to completely recover, but some say it’s going to be longer than for the other recessions in decades. I also scanned an article yesterday that said business owners need a new set of tactics to do well during recovery.
