Apply for a FREE house in Sicily, Italy.

The recently appointed mayor, Vittorio Sgarbi, of Salemi under the guidance of his cultural executive, Oliviera Toscani have decided to bring back to life the historic centre of Salemi by giving away the houses.

The historic town centre which locals abandoned after an earthquake in 1968 is in need of drastic restoration. The mayor has decided that giving away the houses under the condition to restore them in accordance with local building regulations is the solution to regenerating the area.

International celebrities including the owner of Inter football club, Massimo Moretti , along with rumours of Peter Gabriel and Lucio Dalla are among some of the interested parties.

You too can become a part of this new celebrity hotspot and innovative regeneration project !!!

We will write a letter of interest on your behalf to the local council administration. It is not yet sure how the houses will be allocated, but the local council say that within a month further news on allocation will be divulged to those who have expressed an interest.

If you are allocated an Italian property the following conditions will apply ;

  • Purchase the house from the council for a nominal fee, 1 Euro !!!.
  • Restore the house according to local planning & building regulations.
  • Use local Italian builders.
  • Complete restoration within a 2 year deadline.
  • Estimated budget of restoration is 1000 euros per square metre, in Sicily.
  • MIPC will project manage the restoration of the Italian house on your behalf.

Salemi is 72km south west of Palermo and 35km south east of Marsala.

British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet and Air Malta all have direct flights to Sicily. Ryanair flies from Stansted to Palermo and less frequently from Luton and Birmingham to Trapani; EasyJet from Gatwick to Palermo.

With 12 months of sun and breathtaking views across the hills to the Mediterranean Sea, this is your chance to own an historic part of Sicily, Southern Italy and enjoy the Italian culture in your Italian holiday home.

To help reassure you that this is not a scam of any sort, I have personally spoke with the council of Salemi and this news has been documented both in The Times and The Guardian.

If you are interested please email David Moss for further details.

    Mr. Moss:
My husband and I are very interested in participating in the program being offered. We are empty nesters with relations in several European contries. Jim is an urban planner and has worked as a planning director in Los Angeles, CA. I sit on a board at our local historic Bathhouse and Jim sits on a Historic Preservation Overlay Board (HPOZ) in Wilmington, he was appointed to that position by the mayor of Los Angeles. We recently purchaced a small 840 sq ft house in San Pedro and completly remodeled and added 1600 sq ft to it. In doing so kept the architecture of this area in tact making it look like this house has always stood here. We would love the oppertunity to do the same in Italy. Please call us with any questions.

    Bon Journo,

I am a single American female Chef who is a gradaute of the Culinary Institute of America whose lineage includes Sicily.
I have just watched the segment on CBS Sunday Show about Mr. Kim in NYC and your man in Sicily who facilitated the exchange of the extensive collection of DVDs to be housed in a historic library.

At the same time I heard about the ability to purchase a devasted house in Salemi for One Euro.

I would like to purchase at least one of these houses if that is possible given that I am a US citizen but have worked in Europe and traveled through Italy on many occasions to reacquant myself with my heritage.

Please feel free to contact me with the details and what I need to do in order to purchase one of these houses and bring it back to its originality so I may come to live in Sicily and hopefully become part of the local people.

    Thank you for your time,

    Becky Piacente

Wow, how exciting is the thought of purchasing a home in Salemi, Sicily. My grandparents are from Palermo and my mom has dual citizenship in Italy and the U.S.. I have always dreamed of living in Sicily and this may be my best opportunity. I live right out side of Manhattan N.Y. in a small urban community called Fort Lee; it is in New Jersey and I work as a Real-Estate Broker in Manhattan N.Y. My Bother owns a construction company which I am apart of as well. Understanding the concepts and building process of construction it would be an honor to restore the Salemi home to its original architectural integrity.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

    Good Day,
My husband and I are very interested in your renovation project. We have renovated 6 houses in the last 18 years and are looking for our next project with a focus on peaceful living and new experiences. My great-grandparents came to Chicago from Italy in the late 1800s and started a family that today is spread all over the country. The allure of Italy has always been strong and this unique opportunity may just be the one to get me there.

What an interesting opportunity. We have spent a lifetime building and develoiping properties in Virginia. Our children are grown and raising their own families now, and we could devote the time necessary to see such a project through.

One of our children took his entire to family to Sicily for two weeks recently to introduce them to the way of life. It would be an enlightening project for one and all.

If a square meter is equivalent to square foot, that construction could be very expensive. A 900 square foot house would be close to 1 million dollars. And realistically how often would someone of average income in the States travel there to enjoy this huge investment?

    Is my math right?

10.76 sq ft in a sq meter. a 1000 sq ft house would cost $120,000 to refurbish.

    1 euro = $1.30

not bad, since a 2000 sq ft house would cost about $240,000.

What a beautiful thought. I am a master carpenter and familiar with all phases of construction. I would like to hear more in depth details re: Mayor Sgarbi’s innovative idea. E.g. the average size of the homes available? how would I get to choose a specific property or will properties be allocated under some system? what additional costs would be involved after the purchase and renovation of the property i.e. property taxes, etc.? Is there a way to view available properties on a website? I do not speak Italian – would that be a major drawback?

I have been living part time between Rome, Italy and the US for the many years. I have also worked as a volunteer in the National Museum of rome.

Five years ago, i bought an ancient house outside of Rome, that had been badly damaged by an earthquake.
Today, it is completely restored, in keeping with the style of the beautiful town, and the famous street it is on. It was a joy to complete.

I am looking to find another -and would welcome any information and guidance to know more -about the project of the restoration of the town of Salemi.
Of course, I would be pleased to send you photos.

    Sincerely,
    Natalie Primus Fewsmith
